A guild system would actually make sense for tech a la quality seals and stylization and training. There's way too much libertarianism amongst coders and programmers to support any type of union, and even something as basic as a quality stamp via guild would be tough to push. These people often have what Vox Day calls "Gamma" mindset and resent anyone more successful than them.
