What do you owe the real people you base your characters on?

What real people?

(I try *very hard* not to base my characters on identifiable people—they're generally a mashup of different peoples' quirks. I have *occasionally* used someone identifiable for about 70-80% of a character—but generally ask permission first. I'll only go to 100% without permission using a model who is either dead or who I despise so violently I'll happily face them in court.)
