35 years ago today I was awake past midnight in my little student accommodation listening to the radio. What I heard was unbelievable: the Berlin wall had fallen.
That had been inconceivable just shortly before. My grandparents had often taken me to see the heavily fortified border, western side. The guards, fellow Germans, never waved back. My grandmother's home village was just out of sight beyond.
Things can change.
Today I am myself a citizen of the east. And very much at home.
