What I loved the most is music. It’s so rich and layered. My favorites are those “irregular” rythmes like 9/8 or 11/8. Turkish wing had those. Karsilama. Driving.
I went on to performing & teaching. It was the tail end of the golden era of oriental music & dance scene in NYC.
There were cool dance studios. Djoniba on Union Sq. & Fazil’s on 8th Ave had middle eastern, African and frame countries classes.
There were lots of performing venues too.
