But without middlemen, those are the *only* writers we'll get. The set of all writers who have something to say that I want to read is *much* larger than the set of all writers who are capable of running their own publishing operation.
The problem isn't middlemen: the problem is *powerful* middlemen. When an intermediary gets powerful enough to usurp the relationship between the parties on either side of the transaction, everything turns to shit:
