You Will Never Know Why (why@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 03-Nov-2024 22:00:50 JSTYou Will Never Know Why i really love the discussion right at the start of this video:

i think there's an inverse correlation between remakes and the maturity of the artform. books just don't get remakes anymore, but before the printing press, basically every copy was a remake. you have a million different "remakes" of the bible which every bible app/website lets you switch between. paintings also got remade, in the form of direct inspiration (in the copyright world we would call that stealing).
for the purposes of this conversation, film is the closest comparison, and the next newest artform. early hollywood was LOADED with remakes, especially when camera technology+technique was improving. this is most similar to the vidya remakes we see today, rather than the garbage cash grabs of 2010s+ hollywood.
my point is, i think video games now are at the point where hollywood was in the 1930s. still a toy gimmick, but figuring out the "form". the timeline doesn't move linearly, but we're still not at the 1960s where film exploded with art.
