The biggest typhoon to directly hit Taiwan in nearly 30 years has made landfall on the island’s eastern coast. Before making landfall, Typhoon Kong-rey hit sustained winds of 200kph, the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. Schools and businesses closed and residents emptied supermarkets as the storm approached the country. The typhoon has killed at least one person and injured 70 so far, authorities say.
