Choose your life:
You live in a prison, you can not leave the prison, but the prison does sometimes serve free beer.
or:
You live outside of the prison, you are free to live out any type of lifestyle you've ever wanted and you'll be free to travel to anywhere you want. (but you sometimes have to pay for the beer)
This is what we mean when we say "free as in beer" vs "free as in freedom". Something being "free as in beer" is considered a bad thing in this context.
