There's no nefarious purpose behind putonghua and insisting people speak Mandarin. A nation needs a unifying language - how else are they suppose to communicate or have unity? In Malaysia, Malay is our putonghua and the reason why Chinese dialects are dying is because there's no formal way to teach them because many of them don't really have a written language like Hokkien.
