If you are going to donate blood, I highly recommend you just do it at regular, healthy intervals. Please please PLEASE(!!!) do not wait until you get a call for your specific blood type or for these relief efforts.
You just might help better stretch supplies better that way.
Let's talk about item donations now. This is another point of inefficiency in the way that we give. For instance, did you know that roughly half of the food that's donated to food pantries has to be tossed out? Mostly because people use it to empty their pantries.
Even more broadly, when it comes to Disaster Relief, that deluge of donations that I referred to earlier actually has another name: "The Second Disaster".
Because so many supplies get sent in that not all of them can even be used, effectively wasting their usefulness.
