Today marks 56 orbits of the Sun for me, and we have already celebrated. Since today is a Monday, with all of the usual chaos that entails, we went out on Sunday for dinner. This being my birthday, we went out for Steppegras — sort of.
Steppegras is a speciality of the part of Belgium in which I live and involves a large steak, served with its own sauce, and piled high with very thinly cut fries. But this is not quite what we had because the name ‘Steppegras’ is actually a trademark so there are only a few restaurants that serve the real thing.
What we do have, however, are a lot of restaurants serving much the same meal with a slightly different name and a very different sauce. There is a restaurant near us that does this and, I have to admit, that I prefer their version to the real thing.
Whichever version you go for, though, it’s a massive meal and a fantastic treat and something I can well recommend if you ever see the word ‘Steppe’ on a Flemish menu.
