I had a relatively happy upbringing in my super-orthodox mormon family because we were an insular community which had shared values. When the Internet picked up popularity, it became obvious that the entire religion was founded on lies and deception, and that shattered all sense of community. I posit that the same thing happened to Christianity writ large and it wouldn't be nearly so destructive without the help of instant information propagation via the Internet.
