this absence is as far as people get with their reasoning. There ought to be a next step, OK, so there’s no evidence, then why? There must be another reason for the belief, if not an external one, perhaps an internal one, perhaps thus belief causes something else to happen.

Just saying “no,” isn’t much of an improvement.
