Until you consider that a lot of the early settlers wouldn't have survived at all without assistance from the first nations, whom they ultimately ended bleeding dry of resources and then subjugating. It's why Metis exist in Canada for one thing, because the French and Gaelic traders took native wives both to facilitate trade with the native civilisations and so they had a hope in hell of surviving in the local environment whatsoever. Even fundamental infrastructure like the TransCanada highway couldn't have been developed without illegally confiscating treaty payments held in trust by the federal government (aka: Hudson's Bay company).
