The book is centred on a competition where there were 3 randomly selected events per day, one physical, one mental and one about knowledge of the area (friend remembers figure skating being one of the events). Shorter than a novel, pre 2000, probably pre 1992. It was in a magazine, and friend thinks it's most likely in Asimov's, Analog, Omni or F&SF. #IdentifyThatStory #NameThatStory
