IIRC, one of the most influential coders in our field started off as a tech writer who decided that, in order to really do his job well he should learn the subject matter inside out. I’m talking about the late W. Richard Stevens (died 1999 aged 48), the author of “TCP/IP Illustrated,’ “UNIX Network Programming” etc.
I read about this about 30 yrs ago & can’t find the reference now.
One of his books was a key prop in “Wayne’s World 2.”
