Car update: I filled up the car with fuel from a gas station that I normally go to and I can't believe it but the horrific engine noises are gone...

I know realise that the knocking sound started happening after I filled up the car at a shady petrol station in Belgium after Abunaicon.

I can only assume now that the engine noise was just bad petrol causing detonation, not my engine being on its last legs...

Bought a spare engine for nothing. At least I don't have to cancel my vacation to do an engine swap I guess. And having spare engine parts is nice for when I do that eventually tho, could also sell it again if I desperately need money.
