I grew up in a Los Angeles of the ‘70s and ‘80s where it was very normal to have undocumented housekeepers, nannies, gardeners, etc. Because they’d work for far less than their labor’s market value.
And what’s always driven me crazy about the scapegoating—aside from the racism and ignoring how much they pay in taxes—is that it ignores HOW MUCH this country has benefited from decades and decades of exploited labor. That’s got to be a pretty big number if you add it all up.
