"I didn't know." I said, disappointed I missed an opportunity to go to Toy-R-Us and pick a gift for Robbie. Disappointed I didn't get to have cake. "Why didn't I come?"
"My mom said we don't invite Black people." Said Robbie without malice. Both of us were too young to realize what any of this meant. Just more inscrutable adult rules, I can only remember this incident because of how my mom reacted when I told her about it later, casually, over lunch.
