This is why marginalized groups seem to "change what we are called" every 5 years or so. When people want to call you a slur whatever is acceptable can have a way to migrating into being a slur.

I think someone has finally convinced Trump not to say "the Blacks" anymore instead he says "Black population" he can't seem to bring himself to utter the phrase "Black people."

In the other direction his rhetoric is degrading the word itself. Languages are living things I suppose.
