On 19 July 2024, computer systems around the world experienced an outage that led to disruptions across multiple different industries following a faulty update from third-party security software CrowdStrike running on Microsoft Windows.
The affected services include airlines, airports, banking sector, stock markets, broadcasting services, 911 dispatch centers, and all those who use CrowdStrike tools in Windows. Mac- and Linux-based systems remained unaffected. Various countries have reported these outages and have described them as severe. The issue is attributed to a faulty update by CrowdStrike. The United States, Australia and the United Kingdom are among the most affected countries. Multiple authorities have dismissed concerns of a cyberattack and CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz on X confirmed a faulty update caused the outage.
