Paris's preparations for the Olympic Games have included building new venues, preparing an elaborate opening ceremony and ... forcibly evicting residents from its largest squat, an abandoned office building in the industrial suburb of Vitry-sur-Seine. The Dial's Phineas Ruckert reports on how the Olympics is exacerbating Paris's housing crisis, where the waitlist for social housing is nearly 2 million and homelessness has doubled in the last decade. “The Olympics, no question, are a gentrification machine,” says Jules Boykoff, a professor who studies the way the Games reshapes host cities. “We’re talking about cracking up communities that have often been there for generations and sanitizing the space to make it safe for capital.”
