@ajroach42 one of the most important things I learned about history came from watching my uncle, who was in the throes of a Greatest Generation phase, talk to my grandfather, a WWII veteran.
Uncle: "Daddy, I have no idea how y'all pulled it together and held on to win that war."
Grandfather: "At the time, we weren't at all sure we would."
That was really my first confrontation with the fact that the war was, in fact, daily fear that the Axis might win.
