If the engines give out on a plane you just glide into a landing - in many cases there is a runway, field or highway available for landing.

The parachute is only really required when the whole air-frame disintegrates in the air (this isn't very common, but may happen to Boeing due to the large gaps between the body components that haven't been filled).
