The purpose of sports should be inspiring people to be greater than they are. Without the schedule, funding and support that a professional athlete gets, it is exceedingly rare for a man to match up to the pros; but if he is inspired to *try,* to reach and improve himself, he will live an objectively better life.
Men who enjoy watching football should want to play it in some capacity and practice. Flag football, town rugby teams, etc. Same goes for golfers, track and field, or even my own beloved Karate. Don't just watch - do, and if you can't do, practice what you can.
Sure, I'll never be Andy Hug, but I'm going to work to be better than I was before I got into it. Same goes for those guys doing natural bodybuilding, soccer, tennis, etc. It's fun, it build character and capabilities, and it keeps you healthy. In other words, sports gives the man practicing them an - again - objectively better life.
