I actually looked at some open-source project the other day and it had a big, bold, MASSIVE TEXT note at the top saying 'if you try to commit something that is just code cleanup/reformat/style, we will fucking ban you for two years'

... because all you're doing, largely, is:
* making DIFFs with older versions fucked
* invoking a style war, which is entirely the same sort of shit as 'is it potato cake or potato scallop'
