joking aside, the main problem with fedi/mastodon/whatever (I'm definitely using the wrong terminology and I will not stop) vs other places is that it takes time to get any kind of enjoyable feed going.

This is how all sites used to be, including twitter, and it was fine. It was hard then too, but because it was so massive and it was quite easy to find people (and there was social pressure to), it was easier to ride out.
