I think I got homophobia'd today! I went into an auto supply store in one of the more rural suburbs in the area after working a summer sports camp bc my car was idling a bit rough and I wanted some fuel system cleaner. I get to the cashier who asks "is that all?"
Me: yup
Him: *pauses* oh you're one of THOSE people
Me: ?? One of what people? 🤔
Him: *pauses, sees the edge of my hospital badge that is mostly covered by my hair but had previously been looking directly at me, wearing the rainbow lanyard I have from my previous college job* so you're a nurse?
Me: no, an athletic trainer *briefly explains my job*
Him: Oh, so you teach people how to eat right & stuff?
Me: sometimes! I work at a HS in Portland rn and-
Him: oh you're a brave one!
Me: ?!? 🤔🧐

As I walked out, I realized his original implication was "one of THOSE ones" = lesbian, bc it's obviously that I'm gay for girls is why I know anything about cars, and not that all three of my uncles are mechanics 🙃
