@cstross DOTS was an interesting digital, non-magnetic archival tape format. The data are recorded with a "sputtered metal phase-change alloy" that is visible by eye in low density, so the tape leader includes pictographic instructions for building reader hardware. It's supposed to resist almost everything (except acids) for centuries, although it didn't survive Kodak's demise.
