For anyone following my travails, the advice of the immigration info desk was that there is no way to get PR early and I'll have to extend my work visa in late August and then only 4 months later I can apply PR (permanent residence).

My visa extension falls right after when I was planning to go abroad and come back, and also my current visa is in my expired passport. I have asked the company's immigration service provider for advice on whether any of this will make my life complicated or if it's all dandy and I can still fly to FOSSy.
