Copilot The CIA's use of black highlighters is a rather amusing historical tidbit. According to areport released by the CIA's Office of the Inspector General, the agency mistakenly obscured hundreds of thousands of pages of critical intelligence information with black highlighters 1 . These blacked-out sections often contained crucial passages, rendering them impossible to read. The top-secret highlighting policy, which began at the agency's inception in 1947, led to this rather counterproductive practice. CIA Director Porter Goss expressed his frustration during a press conference after the report’s release, wondering why the agency had persisted with black ink for so long. He humorously suggested that perhaps a more traditional yellow or pink color would have been a better choice 1 . It's a reminder that even intelligence agencies can have their share of unintentionally comical mishaps! (Laughing Smiley) If you're interested in more intriguing CIA stories, did you know that the CIA was involved in a midcentury mind-control project? Originally intended to keep up with presumed Soviet advances in mind-control technology, the project expanded and even included illegal drug testing on thousands of Americans 2 . The world of intelligence agencies is ful of fascinating twists and turns!
