They're lying to the public deliberately because one faction wants the oval office and the other is looking to get more overtly involved. Part of all this circus is what iran wants, american involvement. Democrats may have an understanding of what this means, republicans don't seem to care. There may actually be a more significant divide over the issue than people think, but more about how big this thing gets. One wants the lid closed again, the other wants to do global war on terror 2.0
