You know, the other day I told a manufacturing engineer that a "kanban'" is not just a stock location line operators can take shit from, that it's Japanese for "sign" , and that Toyota revolutionized manufacturing with the "Kanban System" by which you take parts from a bin and when the bin is empty you take the sign with the part number to the guy who needs to make more. That's how kanbans improve productivity. Because it's clear where the item goes, when it's run out, and when someone else has already ordered it.
He looked at me like I was retarded and said:
"They take the bin to the stockroom" like that was some kind of meaningful statement.
(when the bin is gone, assemblers sit in front of the rack for 3 hours looking for the missing bin)
