My sister feels this is due to there being no grace or mercy within Hinduism (she's an evangelical Christian) and that their culture chases status and influence. Honestly it's not that far removed from what China has become, except without the authoritarianism to build infrastructure (which was originally not bad in China, but now it's full of tofu cities).

Another issue is that India is not one unified culture. A lot of people in the South can't speak Hindi and people in the north don't know Tamil. It honestly would have been better off it had been partitioned into more nations. The Rupee has "Bank of India" written on it in 14 different languages.
