The real issue here is that our old leaders are right-lurching liberals who want to sic the cops and the vigilantes on the young folk for the same reason hard-hat Democrats beat up on anti-Vietnam protestors: Send a message to Leftists and dissenters that if you get out of line, we will bust your asses. This is about as much about purging the Left in general as it is about defending Bibi.
