So many of these people have an ideological investment in a fantasy version of Israel as a virtuous democracy committed to peace.

It is a fantasy which has increasingly become a farce in light of Israel's own actions, over decades.

I don't know what psychological need this fulfills for them. A lot are just racist and Islamophobic. But they become irrationally angry defending it.

All that "reality based community" stuff goes out the window.
