it's highly debatable what constitutes a tomboy, but a dictionary will tell you a "girl with stereotypical male behavior or interests". since we are not living in the 1920s, we could say athletics are not tomboyish, because it's something women do excel at as well. but on the other hand, competitive sports is a traditionally male field.
