@rosey Just make sure to choose or clear an empty patch of dirt, put rocks in a circle around the fuel and put out what remains of the fire with dirt or water once you're about to leave and you won't start a wildfire - OP's mistake was placing smoldering tinder right on a huge amount of combustible materials and leaving it without extinguishing it.
