It was the 1970s in Soviet Russia. It was terrible and the Americans hated us." And then all of his policy choices today follow from that.
And it's not just him, right. It's all of them. Biden, Trump, Xi Jinping. Every university administrator, every blue chip investor, their opinions are all downstream of a sound byte like that one I just made up. When they consider things like, say, affirmative action, they aren't considering the present reality. They aren't thinking about some 18yo White kid named Kayden who has broccoli hair and wants a fair shake in life. They're thinking of the talented black kid they met who got turned away from jobs/uni for being black. Even the ones who agree with us and vote how we want, in their mind, that talented black kid getting turned away is the present, and them having some abstract concept of Kayden is them peering into the future. To all of them, Kayden isn't a reality but a hypothetical, and the White Album was just released this year.
My point is that everybody in charge unironically seems to think that it's 1975 but with smartphones.
