In England the charge for any single NHS prescription item is fixed at £9.65, regardless of the cost to the NHS of the medication being prescribed.
If you are in receipt of certain sickness or other benefits ('welfare' as it would be in the US I think?), the charge is also waived.
[Obviously, it starts to add up if you're not eligible for free prescriptions and you need several medications regularly.]
