I just referred¹ to this meme as the fundamental thing to understand about Ukraine, and I do believe it is: NATO is a voluntary organisation, respectful of the will of the peoples. That is radically different from the yoke of Russian imperialism..

Now, there is also something seriously incorrect about this image: France actually never left NATO, only its integrated military command structure.

And that is very relevant to a problem we all have today.
