@jordinn chromebooks already come with a version of Gentoo LiGNUx with the freedom removed, so I don't believe the middle schooler had to install Linux - rather I believe a version of GNU/Linux with freedom was installed, or the developer mode was enabled and the missing parts of GNU were installed.

Why must one ask permission to install things on what should be your computer?
