On March 26, 2024, at 01:28 EDT (05:28 UTC), the main spans of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, across the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, collapsed after the Singapore-flagged container ship Dali struck one of its support pillars.Two people were recovered from the river; one declined medical treatment and the other was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Six members of a construction crew working on the roadway are reported missing and presumed to be dead.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, originally the Outer Harbor Crossing, was a steel arch-shaped continuous truss bridge. It opened in 1977, and ran northeast from Hawkins Point in Baltimore, to Sollers Point, in Dundalk, and crossing the Patapsco River, a vital shipping route in the Port of Baltimore. The shipping route is one of the busiest in the United States; it handled more than 444,000 passengers as well as 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo valued at $80 billion in 2023.
