EatonWhat interests me is that last statement: “[Attention] is all a really clever boy requires in order to rise.” The wave of folks swept up in a new technology boom's demand for inexperienced-but-able laborers are tremendously fortunate. People who rise to power and success during those waves certainly worked hard, but even when they acknowledge their fortune they seem to genuinely believe that the work — minus the favorable conditions — is all subsequent generations need.
