Most people would decry the idea that you can just excise uncomfortable thoughts in your mind as absurd if asked outright, but they never treat it as so when it comes down to it. In this example of media, no I cannot just pretend the terrible sequels and prequels and remakes and spin offs don't exist. It's literally impossible. I WILL think about them thinking about the originals, they're existence and my knowledge of them actually does damage the originals irrevocably, exactly as they're meant to. All the spiteful 're-imaginings' of past work purposefully change core elements of the whatever it is so that they become a crucial part of the whole.
