Thanks to this becoming a meme there are probably a significant number of people who know the "right answer" despite not getting it.
And I think they could imagine different versions of themselves, just not versions of themselves that contradict their current selves. They couldn't answer differently based on the past because that is already decided but you could ask them how they would feel about eating pancakes tomorrow and get a sensible answer (I think at worst they would treat it as a genuine invitation to pancakes). They're capable of speculating and making decisions because that doesn't go against any concrete knowledge in their brain.
