I'm not sure, but in many countries it seems that demand you run proprietary malware to register for donating and then analyze the blood via machines that run proprietary software, which clearly isn't free in any way.

I'm fairly certain that there's a profit made from each blood bag transfused and you would think that they would have the decency to pass some of the profit to the donator, but of course not.
