@corbin I would suspect hearing loss. Now that I'm older (I have kids in their 30s and 40s), I can barely hear the phone if I hold it to my ear, but speaker mode is easily audible.

In my case, though, my son got me a bone conduction Bluetooth headset and it works far better than speaker ever did.
