Many, simply rush through all the books that they read and then, when quizzed by anyone familiar with the materials read, the readers come up lacking, since they rushed past pertinent details.
Books, are there to be read multiple times since there are many points, details and hints, that are overlooked, through casual reading. It is the very reason why many people take notes, so that they may have reminders which may be revisited and revised when necessary. I think the greater point is, that many people go through their lives skimming over the details and never quite understanding the situations around them.
