In both, once you accept the worldview in which the evidence makes sense the objects have explanatory power. That's how academic knowledge works, that's how religious knowledge works.

I don't know why this is controversial. It's not possible to prove that either God or quarks exist. The reasons to assume they do are of the same nature.
